Pencil This In: Monday (MLK Edition)

Close Encounters

It’s kinda quiet on the event front, a perfect day to reflect on Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. But if you're into going out tonight:

CLASSICAL
Southwest Chamber Music continues its Musical Imagination and Color series with a concert featuring 20th century composers, including Stravinsky, Milhaud, Berg, and Bartók. Violinist Lorenz Gamma, clarinetist Jim Foschia and pianist Ming Tsu are on the bill tonight.

8 // Colburn School Of Performing Arts: Across The Street From Walt Disney Concert Hall // 200 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles // $10-$38.

FILM
Experimental filmmaker Robert Nelson has a screening of his films tonight at REDCAT. The San Francisco native is known for his “prankster experimentalism and on-the-spot invention.”

8:30 pm // REDCAT // 631 W. Second St., Los Angeles // $9.

FOOD
Barragan’s Mexican Restaurant in Echo Park has been around for more than 40 years. It’s popular with those eating on the cheap on Monday nights because of its $1 soft tacos.

Restaurant closes at 9:30 // Barragan’s Mexican Restaurant // 1538 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles // Depends on how many you eat. Duh.

FILM (OPTION 2)
As part of AFI’s “100 years…100 movies” series, the ArcLight in Sherman Oaks screens Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The film is #31 on AFI's 100 Years… 100 Thrills list and #58 on AFI's 100 Years… 100 Cheers list. Now while we know that the film is Spielberg’s personal homage to the possibilities of space, time and imagination, etc., we still find the film a bit on the boring side and the ending a big letdown.

7:30 PM // ArcLight Sherman Oaks // 15301 Ventura Blvd. // $9.75-$12.75.
