OPERA
Yes, opera! Why not? Farewell My Concubine: The Opera arrives at the Pasadena Civic in all its splendor. It is "ia classic Chinese Opera that is being reinterpreted into a Western opera to be presented in the United States [...] by the Chinese American Inter-Cultural Exchange Foundation" and marks the rare ocassion an opera is being performed by its original Chinese cast in Mandarin. "The story revolves around Xiang Yu, the King of Chu people and his foe, Han Xing , the King of the Han people. The two warriors are locked in battle, and Xiang Yu, fearing defeat, calls for his concubine, Yuji who begs to die alongside her master." Sounds like perfect opera fodder!

come on farewell my concubine over tristan and isolde?!?!
COME ON! Linda Watson was spectacular as Isolde but I think Kristinn Sigmundsson/King Marke really stole the show...he also got the loudest applause, deservedly so.
and the david hockney set was neato. using that word probably destroyed any credibility to my post though( if i had any to begin with).
I am so totally looking for someone to write this column on the weekends! Or I could go for someone who wants to review opera for the site, why not? You offering, samkim? :)
hahaha no i'm only seeing three operas this season, and i'm just one of those many people that like complaining about something and not doing anything about it.
