• Bobby Fischer died this week. He was totally insane and totally brilliant, a prodigy and a pariah. In the world he inhabited, the only thing you could possibly do was throw up your hands and move to Iceland. Chess players, you know?
  
• Twelve California research institutions (including UCLA and USC) are in the running for $263 million dollars worth of valuable stem-cell research funding from the the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
  
• The body of a twenty-something man was found below the underpass of the 118 freeway near Topanga Canyon Blvd; the victim had died of several stab wounds.
  
• More than a hundred students gathered this week at UCLA to commemorate the deaths of Alprentice “Bunchy” Carter and John Huggins, members of the Black Panther political group who were assassinated on campus at Campbell Hall on January 17th, 1969.
  
• Two suspects have been arrested for the shooting deaths of two teenagers at an abandoned bunker in a rural community south of Barstow.
  
• Dude, couldn't you have just joined the Police Department or something? A convicted criminal has been charged with impersonating an L.A. County firefighter; the man also "showed up at the scenes of national and local disasters, including the World Trade Center after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as hurricanes Katrina and Rita." Can't somebody give the poor guy a job?
