LAMill Boutique: Not Your Grandma's Coffeehouse

LA Mill finally (soft-)opened its "boutique" in Silver Lake last Friday and we were lucky to get there in time to sample the goods -- for free. The space is impressive but the environment -- almost pretentiously over the top. But let's discuss the coffee:

I had two clover-style (filtered French drip) cups, one Kenyan, was an average medium-dark blend, with an acidic yet moderately rich, roasted coffee bean aftertaste. I was more impressed with the Aged Sumatran Peaberry, although I nearly gagged just typing that out. And no it didn't taste like sour yogurt. It had legitimate richness and spice, which was lacking in the Kenyan.

A variety of teas were also available -- however, their names seemed to suggest that any tea drinker has some ulterior motive in their tea consumption aside from the enjoyment and flavor of the beverage. No really, many of these teas had names such as Weigh Loss, Stress Free, Get Fit, and the like.

Espresso drinks are available at only slightly above-market prices (all under $5) as are simple pastries (croissants, blueberry muffins, scones, etc).

There is also a line of "Signature drinks" which include a non-alcoholic "mojito," and non-alcoholic coffee-style dessert drinks for $5-6.

Don't come here if you're vegan or on a strict, Kosher or otherwise diet. Vegetarians? Even your Kentucky goat cheese panini will set you back $14. Fancy schmancy squash soup? $12. There are four salad choices as well. I had the Farcell, which was a truly exceptional panini. Good ol' regular cow's milk cheese wrapped in coffee rind (or something) with scallions, thinly-sliced Spanish chorizo large, mild piquillo pepper slices. It was good, and along with the small serving of (sadly, not more than a dozen) handmade potato chips and olives, was filling ($16).

It was opening day and all the goods were complimentary, however, this did little to influence this review. Two cups of coffee + panini + tax + tip likely would have run about $35 on any other day.

LA Mill is bound to be a destination for young Silver Lake couples and their offspring (they also sell homemade dog biscuits at $5/dozen). Especially when the grandparents are in town.

Don't get me wrong, though, the space is cozy, and the service -- very good and knowledgeable. If you wish to stay there, you get full table service and there are 4 or 5 nice sidewalk-adjacent tables outside.

Knowing what you know now, check out LAMill. It's best experienced as a dessert destination, the small bundles of solid and or liquid sweets aren't big enough to share but they do make the place unique.

That may not be my grandmother's coffeehouse, but I think that's my grandmother's chandelier.

haha when I saw the chandelier I asked them who designed the place. Apparently its a little design firm called "rubbish", but I couldn't find them online. The wall paper hits though.

"Rubbish" is probably a sly attempt by the server to your question who just didnt know the answer.

Now coffee baristas are going to be in McDonald's (can't wait for that review!).

Are there table limits if you want to go and do work? Wifi?

I like weirdos in my coffee shops, is that so wrong? All of these hipster haven corrals are at least showing off places I know I won't be frequenting.

I'm really interested in trying the stuff out, but doubt I would be a regular.

I actually already have a few pounds of LA Mill coffee (thanks to the rich/trendy students and parents of the Harvard-Westlake School for their charity to math teachers), and I'm planning on doing a big blind taste test this weekend, comparing it to Intelligentsia AND Dunkin Donuts. It's going to be insanely, insanely fun.

Andy, my favorite thing about your review is that in the same sentence that you mention Silver Lake couples and their offspring you let us know LAMill has dog biscuits available. I'm not sure if I'm more amused by people feeding their kids dog cookies or treating their dogs like kids.

Elise, you crack me up.

Carrie, uhmmmm, if you need any help taste testing, give me a call. I loves me some coffeeeeeee!

Lindsay, thanks for picking up on my wee lil funny :-)

Sloane, I'm embarrassed to say that I left without an answer on the WiFi front. It was tricky to truly judge the space as it was day one of a soft open, complete with too many roaming servers and slightly nervous managers.

I too like freaks with my coffee and WiFi is a must. And I hate way-too-fancy silverware, especially when all you need is *maybe* a spoon to stir the coffee. But, I forgot to mention the best quote from my otherwise very knowledgeable and friendly server:

Server: "Do you need cream and sugar or anything?

Me: "No, I think I'll see how it tastes just black at first.

Server: "Yeah, we don't recommend adding anything because our coffee is soooo good."

Me: "Oh."

Last time I was in SF Phil (of Philz Coffee) said he was scoping out a place near Sunset/Fountain. Now THAT I think I could get into.

the prices at this place -- for the food and the joe -- are ridiculous. please, $5.50 for a latte? i'm so sure!

the food is tasty, but don't go hungry to brunch.

It's rubbish interiors who decorated it - and their showroom is right across the street!
