Goodbye Back Door Bakery

Back Door Bakery

Sad news, East siders! As of January 14th, Back Door Bakery is officially closed. Although the bakery has been at 1710 Silver Lake Blvd for 17 years, this past December the landlord for the building provided BDB 30 days notice to leave the premises. But all is not lost. While at the bakery on Sunday, I overheard one of the employees tell a customer that Back Door Bakery is currently in the midst of finding a new location and would keep everyone posted via their Myspace page.

The fact that I can no longer walk down the street to pick up a chocolate croissant is very upsetting. It's the neighborhood spot! In its last day, you could see that the community was already deeply affected by the loss of the Silver Lake landmark. Loyal customers from far and wide piled into the little shop to order the down home baked goods, breakfast and sandwiches while they still could.

So now that Back Door Bakery is gone, where are we supposed to purchase our morning coffee and treats? Well, it seems the new spot is LA Mill Coffee, which LAist reported on last week. Located less than 100 feet from where Back Door Bakery used to be, LA Mill touts that it supplies "not only the finest coffee in the world" but also delivers "a service program that is unlike anything in the industry."

Warning potential customers. Such fine service comes at a price. Although I have yet to try out the new place, I stopped by and took a look at the menu. In addition to coffee, LA Mill provides pastries and food, such as soups, salads and sandwiches, which are all expensively priced. For instance, a panini is $16 and an espresso is $5. Clearly, these price points are not meant for the economically challenged.

Which brings me to my next point..the gentrification of Silver Lake. When did it transform to such a yuppie area? First the real-estate sky rocketed to unbelieveable amounts, then the area was infiltrated by soccer moms with nannies and hubbies driving around in their Range Rovers. Now the locals are being pushed out by companies trying to cash in on the trendiness of the community. What's next...Starbucks and Pinkberry? Oh wait, I spoke too soon.
