The Tangier is hosting Shark Aid and it has nothing to do with saving those sometimes nasty sea dogs. Aaron Finely, a local sound engineer and musician (Rexaquarium, Kennedy, Joe Lies) was attacked by a shark last October, losing a good chunk of his leg. The medical bill is quite steep, so his friends set up this benefit concert to help out (story via Metromix). Lucky for Finely, his friends play great music. Tonight: the respected and solid folk musician, Patrick Park, the spacey, lusic and fun pop quartet,
Pink Mochi and the feel-good all American folk rock band, Charlie Wadhams.

A fixture, as of late, at The Redwood Bar downtown (he'll be there tomorrow night), garage blues band Jake LaBotz goes Westside style to Liquid Kitty. Check out his more bluesy side below:

Feeling like rap and hip-hop? Go the Knitting Factory for The Pack, Compton local, Tyga and JW from Baton Rouge, who will stick around Los Angeles to visit a couple LAUSD schools in the new couple of weeks.

Continuing their Sunday night Spaceland residency is Upsilon Acrux. If you know and like the free jazz punk trio, ahem, we mean no wave band, The Flying Lutenbachers, then you'll dig these guys. Maybe a better reference is this: think of a more rock approach to what the Art Ensemble of Chicago does with jazz. Speaking of which, the Chicago jazz band plays this Saturday at REDCAT at the CalArts Creative Music Festival (disclosure, the author of this columns is a CalArts alumnus).
