Pencil This In: Wednesday

Rolling Stones and Jean-Luc Godard

Sure, you could always stay in and watch reruns of [insert name of your favorite show here], but why bother when you have these things happening tonight to get you through hump day.

WORDS
The West LA Chapter of the Sierra Club hosts a lecture by UCLA Professor David Haake who’ll focus on the question, “Do green choices make financial sense?” The evening will also offer steps on how you can reduce your carbon footprint on earth, and attendees are encouraged to bring their Edison or DWP energy bills for a little practical advice.

7 pm // Culver City Veterans Memorial Auditorium in the Uruapan Room // 4117 Overland Ave., Culver City.

SPORTS
Here’s your chance to make good on your New Year’s Resolution (yeah, remember those?) to get in shape. Co-ed Sports LA offers an alternative to meet people AND get in shape without having to hit the Stairmaster or mindlessly bike into oblivion while watching the same segments of CNN on the TV at the gym. On tap tonight are indoor volleyball, basketball and soccer games.

6:30 pm (volleyball), 8:15 pm (basketball), 9:30 pm (soccer) // Hollywood Methodist Church // 6817 Franklin Ave., Los Angeles // $7.

FILM
Yes, we know the Golden Globes have been cancelled, but you can still enjoy the films themselves. The Aero begins screening all the movies in the Best Foreign Language category. Tonight, it’s The Kite Runner, adapted from the book from Khaled Hosseini. It tells the tale of one boy’s act of betrayal and 20 years of seeking atonement.

7:30 pm // Aero Theatre // 1328 Montana Ave., Santa Monica // $10.

FILM (Option 2)
If foreign films aren’t your thing, how about a movie about '60s counterculture? Sympathy for the Devil – with a Rolling Stones recording session of the title song as backdrop – was released in 1968. It was a time for the Black Panthers, the Kennedys and rock'n'roll. It was a time before Mick Jagger sold out and started doing “Dancing in the Street” duets with David Bowie.

7 pm // Hammer Museum // 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles // Free.
