Pencil This In: Tuesday

Happy Birthday, Elvis

Rain rain has gone away...so Tuesday we'll go out to play. Here's what's going on around town tonight:

MUSIC
The LA Phil’s Concrete Frequency series continues tonight. “Songs of the City” is being billed as a program where “urban troubadours share lo-fi songs about city life.” We’ll believe it with a lineup that features: Marc Bianchi, Biirdie, Franklin Bruno, Zooey Deschanel, John Doe, Inara George, Stevie Jackson, Sondre Lerche, Kyp Malone, Bob Mould, Zach Rogue and Daniel Rossen.

8 pm // Walt Disney Concert Hall // 111 S. Grand Avenue , Los Angeles // Try your favorite scalper.

FILM
The Egyptian’s “Rediscovered Italian Classics” ends tonight with a double feature of Michelangelo Antonini’s Identification of a Woman, about a filmmaker’s search for a leading lady. “On a search for both a committed passion and the ideal woman for his next film, Niccolo hungrily loses himself in sex, but he is unable to express love.” Director Valerio Zurlini’s Black Jesus screens immediately following.

7:30 pm // Egyptian Theatre // 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles // $10.

SPOKEN WORD
The NYC nonprofit organization The Moth brings its StorySLAM to LA. Here’s the premise: If you’re good a spinning yarns, then StorySLAM is for you. They provide the theme and the mic – you put your name in the hat and if you’re picked, you have 5-minutes to tell your story – no papers allowed. “The stories are scored by three teams of audience-member judges, and a winner is announced at every SLAM. SLAM winners later face off in a Moth GrandSLAM.”

Until 7 pm // Tangier // 2138 Hillhurst Ave., Los Angeles // $6.

ELVIS’S BIRTHDAY
Celebrate The King’s birthday with more than 20 bands tonight, including: Mike Stinson, The Blasters, Michelle Shocked. We don’t know if they’re serving deep-fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches...

7:30 pm // The Music Box @ Fonda // 6126 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood // $25.

POLITICS
Hear former Nixon presidential counsel John Dean talk about the current state of American politics (and maybe slam the Bus administration) in “Pre-Election Post-Partnership.” His most recent book Broken Government, focused on the process by which a corrupted version of conservatism has broken down the national government. Joining Dean is political journalist and blogger David Sirota. The forum will be moderated by Ian Masters, host of the radio program Background Briefing on KPFK 90.7 FM.

8 pm // Hammer Museum // 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles // Free.
