TV Junkie: Network Late Night Hosts Return - Can You Hear Me Now?

Conan O'BrienSo tonight it's Leno vs. Letterman, Conan vs. Ferguson - potentially unfair matches since Letterman and Ferguson have reached an agreement with the writers' union and NBC hasn't. This will mean a further addition to my sleep deficit as I will be sitting up and flipping between these networks until 1:30am [no, I don't have some swank double-satellite-dish-to-Tivo setup like some of you, if you're interested in helping out, I can give you an address to where you can send the money, or better yet, if you are a satellite provider, hook me up.]

Even though I'm not a fan of Leno, he's earned his chops doing stand-up and continues to make in-person appearances on a regular basis, so he very well might be able to hold his own. Conan I know can pull this off but I know he's on good terms with his writers so the question is, how far is he going to go? Would it be a tragedy for his show to be great without writers contributing? His writers are fantastic though, and if there's one show I've missed over the past couple months it's Late Night. Oh yeah, and Jimmy Kimmel is coming back on the air too.

For tonight's listings, you'll find them after the jump.

7:45pm White Heat TCM - (1949) James Cagney plays awesome psychopath Cody Jarrett. Worth watching for so many incredible one-liners.

8:00pm Pioneers of Television PBS/KCET - Series Premiere. This is a four part series looking at how the medium of TV has been corrupted to what it has become today (snark). This first segment looks at the early sitcoms: I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, etc. TV Junkie 8:00pm Pick.

8:00pm Wife Swap ABC - Season Premiere.

9:00pm Supernanny ABC - Season Premiere. I forgot how much I enjoyed not watching this show.

10:00pm Project Runway BRAVO - Season Premiere. Did you catch the marathon of episodes last week? My head is still reeling.

11:00pm Make Me a Supermodel: Casting Special BRAVO - Series Premiere. People who think they look hot, wanting to get paid for looking hot. It's a form of natural selection I guess.

11:30pm The Late Show With David Letterman CBS - "Season" Premiere. Robin Williams guests and Shooter Jennings performs.

11:35 The Tonight Show With Jay Leno NBC - "Season" Premiere. Well lookie here, Leno is providing his show to be a bully-pulpit for yet another Republican: Mike Huckabee.

12:00am Jimmy Kimmel Live ABC - "Season" Premiere. Jimmy proves that, when in doubt, get Andy Dick and Kid Rock on the show.

12:30am The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson CBS - "Season" Premiere. The website says "no guests" for tonight. Does this mean Craig's winging the whole thing?

12:30am Late Night With Conan O'Brien NBC - "Season" Premiere. Comedians crossing the picket lines are: Bob Saget and Dwayne Perkins

not to let anyone down, but tonight is not a season premiere of project runway. it's the 6th episode of the newest season. it just took a break during the holidays.

Craig Ferguson is doing an all-written-comedy, no-guests format tonight in honor of his writers.

Good man, Ferguson. And Dave...wow, he is just THE MAN. I am so naming my first born DAVE (yes, all caps)

Conan should just have a silent and lifeless Triumph the insult comic dog on. Maybe holding a tiny strike sign.

That's sorta funny - the "Pioneers of Television" episode is going to be covering work where the writers/creators of classic shows were totally ripped off by the studios. That era of writers does not receive any royalties (as there was no secondary market at the time those shows were written) even though their work is reused constantly and generates millions every year.

Just goes to show why the writers are striking now - to protect their future.
