So you've been bowled over by our Best of the Year lists, but do you demand more? Scratch that, do you crave more? Because if you do, you're in luck. Here's a round up of some of 2007's more creative year-end round ups.
Time's Top Ten Underreported Stories of the Year. You gotta love how Time gets into the list spirit this, well, time of year. Twenty-five top tens, with everything from kids books to business deals getting squeezed into short pithy paragraphs much like this one. Their best option is the underreported stories of the year, which will probably enlighten/depress you (how many Americans got put in the clink this year?)
Pitchfork's Worst Album Covers of the Year. Love them or hate them, no one does cynical snark quite like the writers over at Pitchfork Media. This is like shooting fish in a barrel. Ugly, ugly fish.
The A.V.Club's Least Essential Albums of 2007. The A.V. Club, aka The Onion's non-joke cultural section, has, word for word, some of the best criticism on Teh Interwebz. This yearly list isn't exactly chronicling the worst music of the year, but the music that, in their words, has "the least reason for existing". I mean, who was asking for a KT Tunstall Christmas album? Nobody, that's who.
Metacritic's Best Music of 2007. At least here in the States, nothing is reviewed more than music. Metacritic has taken a good long look at all the reviews that matter and put a nice shiny number on them. Surprisingly, this hive-mind tactic doesn't end with either the Arcade Fire or Radiohead at No. 1. They also have the individual rankings of all their sources, which include everywhere from Q to Amazon.com. Make sure to check out their video game top lists too.
Lifehacker's Top 10 New and Improved Apps of 2007. Lifehacker's motto is "Tech Tricks, Tips, and Downloads for Getting Things Done". This list sums all that up pretty awesomely. While some of the mentions are a bit too obvious (Leopard OS X? Really?), there are some real gems here, like their recommendation of Mint, the open source money manager.
The New York Times's Ten Best Books of 2007. As much as those of us here in Blogfrica love throwing stones at the mainstream media, sometimes they handle their shit proper. Are you gonna challenge the New York Times on the best books of 2007? Because I sure as hell ain't.
Google's Year-End Zeitgeist. I've always been surprised that this doesn't get more attention. One of the world's biggest companies has been gathering information about us all year, and now they release some of it. Nothing too Earth-shattering here, but a neat snapshot of what we're all googling nonetheless.
Of course, if there's one thing in abundance in this cold, cruel world, it is top ten lists. Which best ofs did we miss? Any Top Tens you feel are worthy of a shout out?
