Friday AM News

Union Station sees some holiday cheer and probably some grumbling travelers at Christmastime

  • Hold on to your hats just a little while longer! High-wind warnings are still in effect this morning for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Gusts this morning have been clocking in at speeds of up to 60 mph. A less severe wind warning--but a warning nonetheless--has been issued for the mountainous areas of San Bernardino and Orange Counties until mid-afternoon.
  • Lonely, horny men looking for a hookup on Craigslist in the SGV had their options lessened this week by 37, as a LA Co. Sherrif's sting called "Operation Red Light" netted babes for prostitution and other charges Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan of Northridge died last night at UCLA Medical Center, not long after her family was told she could get the life-saving liver transplant she was waiting for. Her transplant was approved by CIGNA, her health insurance provider, after a protest outside their Glendale offices on Thursday put pressure on the company, who had previously denied her claim. The teen's need for a liver was a result of a complication following a bone-marrow transplant she had this summer as treatment for her leukemia.
  • And the "Dumbest Criminal of the Week" award goes to: The two bank robbers from Hemet who were arrested when they returned to the scene of their crime 45 minutes later. The robbery was at a Bank of America in Temecula just before 6 last night. The two men drove back into the parking lot after they had forced a teller to hand over money via a demand note--but bank staffers had jotted down the license plate number of their getaway vehicle and were already following them. C'mon, people, rob and run--don't drive in a circle!

Great shot of Union Station - I've spent many an hour in those chairs!

The fate of Nataline Sarkisyan is incredibly sad and a poignant example of our sometimes reckless health care system in which life and death can be determined by the ruthlessness and carelessness of an insurance provider alone.

The story of Sarkisyan's death, just a day after many had rallied for her cause, is getting BIG TIME notice in national print and TV news, and for good reason I believe.

Her family filed suit this morning against CIGNA insurance.
