lytmycndle-- I've spoken to others who were fans of the original musical and they loved the film. From what I understand, Sondheim is quite in love with it, too. Burton has given him a copy of the film to screen to his friends.

Speaking as a HUGE fan of this show and someone who has played Johanna, I am so excited about this, I can hardly stand it. I'm really glad to hear that people are responding so well to it. I personally think it's the greatest piece of musical theatre ever written.

Yeah, they are both true innocents who lack complexity. Rickman as Turpin, though, is fascinating. The portrayal is very ambivalent, which I loved.

In my experience, the love story between Joanna and Anthony (the milquetoast to end all milquetoasts) is *always* a little flat, no matter who acts or directs...
