Woman at Tow Yard Died at Crash Scene

Car crash in Los AngelesThe coroner's results are in regarding Saturday morning's crash in Tarzana in which the driver was rescued, but the passenger was not seen and towed away in the car, only to be found the next day dead.

Shirley Lee Williams of Paso Robles, Calif., died within minutes after the car driven by her son plowed into a Tarzana office complex Saturday morning, according to a preliminary report by the Los Angeles County coroner's office. The report did not address whether the woman could have been saved had paramedics quickly treated her.

The car, driven by Steven Williams, 48, also of Paso Robles, tore through the back of a stucco building and shattered wood supports and plaster. His mother was in the passenger seat. Her body, apparently hidden by an inflated air bag, was not discovered until Sunday, after relatives reported her missing. [LA Times]

Williams was questioned whether anyone else was in the car or not and he answered negatively. Though, authorities are now questioning whether he really understood the questions or not.

Not only is the LAPD investigating, but the state Emergency Medical Services Authority will be looking into whether or not rescue personnel properly evaluated the accident scene. The agency regulates paramedics and has the authority to suspend or revoke licenses for violating medical care standards.

Brian Humphrey, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, said it best on LAist's comment section about how sad this story is. "This is a heart-breaking story for even someone remotely involved."
