I remember when Elise went there a while back. The big question is, what's going to win, cupcakes or Pinkberry?

juice bars... oxygen bars... chic yogurt... designer cupcakes...

These are some of the somewhat arbitrary consumerfads that pop-up, multiply and thrive here, but you wouldn't really see in places elsewhere.

We live in LA, thats half the battle. Now all we have to do is think of the next weirdish big thing, and make a move.

· Handmade corduroy sandals?

· Iced gourmet dog biscuits?

· Kosher iPods?

· Natural sun tanning beds? (essentially just fancy buildings with open holes in the ceilings; $15 entry)

Yes, one of my jobs is right near that dang Sprinkles place, so I drive past it often. There is a line every time. I don't eat cupcakes, so I can't know what the fuss is about, but my guess is that there must be a sliding cupcake-quality to hype ratio.

Sprinkles is totally overrated. Suzycakes (?) on San Vicente in brentwood is much better. Better yet, a donut from anywhere. Donuts always beat cupcakes in my book.

i would like to second the shout-out to Auntie Em's. without a doubt the best cupcakes i've ever had - red velvet, coconut, and chocolate - all brilliant.

Good write up!

There's some trendy new cupcake store in Burbank called Yummy... http://www.yummycupcakes.com/

The cupcakes there were pretty decent (as good as a cupcake can be, I guess), parking was free and fast, there was no line. Pretention was fairly low (I mean, you're still at a frickin' cupcake boutique, but there was nothing uncomfortable about it).

If you're looking to try one of these cupcakes, you can nix all the BevHill bullshit and hit Burbank on the quick'n'easy.

Not really. I've had Sprinkles cupcakes twice. Once, I waited in line for 30 minutes with a friend. The other time I just happened to be on Little Santa Monica and there was no line, so I went in to grab a mid afternoon snack.

The cupcakes are very doughy tasting, and there is way too much icing on top. Also, you have to eat them the day you buy them because they turn rock hard after one day in or out of the refrigerator.

Don't waste time in line. Try stopping by during odd hours (Weekdeays anytime except the noon hour). and try them for yourself.

Seriously, Sprinkles is highly overrated. Yes, the cupcakes are good (mostly due to the gratuitous amount of frosting), but not worth the wait in line or $5 a piece.

If you want a REAL cupcake (that is, where the cake part is actually soft and moist) then try the cupcakes at Auntie Em's Kitchen (http://www.auntieemskitchen.com/) in Eagle Rock. The Red Velvet cupcakes are exceptional and so are the chocolate ones. They also have mini cupcakes for those times when you just want a taste of something awesome. For my money, they are the best in town.

Yes, Sprinkles has great cupcakes. But so do many other establishments in Los Angeles--ones with much shorter lines.

I think the attitude is that if there isn't a line, it isn't worth having.
