Molly's Charbroiled Burger, Hollywood

Molly's Charbroiled Burger, a rickety burger shack on Vine between Selma and Hollywood, is one of those funny little places that is both totally ordinary and totally L.A. -- run by Koreans, with a Mexican line cook, who serve up good old American burgers, fries, hot dogs, burritos, and, um, bulgogi plates. Students at the neighboring film and recording schools swear by the breakfast burritos -- cozy bundles of egg, french-fry hash browns, bacon, and salsa, a filling meal for only $3.50. I still rue the day I showed up at Molly's with only $3.25 in change, and be warned, they're not big on substitutions. I ended up getting some toast and coffee. Breakfast burrito it was not. Molly's really is a godsend, however, for those who are seeking out a substantial breakfast in the early morning hours -- they open at 7am, and serve up huge cups of hot coffee that'll cost you a pretty penny less than Starbucks.

Molly's also serves a reliable lunchtime burger, and if you can't make it to Skooby's, the hot dogs come with all the chili-cheese-bacon-onion-craziness you could desire. Potatomato discovered Molly's secret, and reports that the fish sandwich is a far superior choice than what McDonald's has to offer.There's a veggie burger on the menu, but no veggie hot dog, so it doesn't pass the Zach test, but vegheads, don't be scared off -- Molly's has something for everybody.

And of course, the place has its own Hollywood history: a skit from "Jackass 2" was filmed here, one of the Johnny-Knoxville-dressed-as-old-man pranks. Even John Constantine has eaten here -- okay, fine, Keanu Reeves as Constantine in the 2005 movie. There are a few seats inside the stand, but it's also fun to pull up a stool on the street, overlooking the Walk of Fame stars, and watch construction go up on the new W Hotel. I might go shell out a few bucks for some tasty fries right now.
