Home Depot has been trying to build a Sunlund-Tujunga location for awhile now, but community activism and the LA City Council has put a stop to that, or at least a major delay.
Now, in a suit brought forth by The Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust and the University Park Estates Neighborhood Assn., a Home Depot planned for southeastern Long Beach was given a major setback in court yesterday.
The Long Beach City Council had approved the state-required review for a proposed 16.5-acre Home Depot Design Center across Studebaker Road from the 400-acre Los Cerritos Wetlands.Supporters say the project would improve former industrial land and bolster the Long Beach economy. Critics contend that it would exacerbate traffic problems and threaten the largest privately owned coastal marsh in Southern California.

In his ruling, Torribio faulted the environmental [impact] report... for insufficient review of Home Depot's potential effects on the burrowing owl and certain plants, and for not analyzing how the project's lighting and noise could affect the wetlands. He also cited an inadequate review of air quality data. [LA Times]
Let's face it, Home Depot is just not a fun place to shop anyway. If we had a choice, it's all about the better service at Lowes.

I don't know about Lowe's being better. They both seem to wallow in their own craptitude. Both have some of the most useless AND clueless people on the floor. At Lowe's they actually move their lips when they read. Lowe's is cleaner, Home Depot has a much better selection AND is cheaper. Lowe's plants cost more and look healthier than Home Depot's. Home Depot plants last longer and grow faster.
And I'm convinced that if more lumber yards and stone yards didn't have holier-than-thou sorts working at them, places like Home Depot or Lowe's wouldn't be needed. I'd never buy from a STOCK lumber yard because every time I go in with my measurements, they act like it's a chore I'm trying to find straight wood. Pavers at Home Depot cost $0.10 = $1.34 more than the pavers at the stone yard, charges more for delivery and has an extremely limited selection, yet the people at the stone yards will leave you waiting for 20 - 30 before they even speak to you.
But thank goodness I live where I do. I have Newland's True Value Hardware AND Aguilar Lumber nearby. Both have lower prices than HD (the closet is in Alhambra) excellent customer service and I'm contributing to the City of LA's taxes.
Do It Center in Burbank ain't bad. Not the greatest selection, but it's cleaner than most stores and almost never crowded.
