Sherman Oaks fire leaves one dead

A fire on Dickens St. in a Sherman Oaks apartment
Photo from Sunday's early morning fire on Dickens St. in Sherman Oaks

Early Sunday morning, a fire started in a three-story Sherman Oaks apartment building that took the Los Angeles Fire Department 30 minutes to knockdown. At the scene, all residents were outside, talking amongst each other and hugging before first and second story tenants were allowed to return to their units 90 minutes later.

A 40-year-old woman was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation and a child was treated at the scene. A 70-year-old man died, whose name has not been released. He was found unconscious with second and third-degree burns and in full cardiac arrest.

Due to the injuries and death, arson investigators and police treated the scene as a possible crime scene. If you've ever been to a fire scene before, this one definitely felt different than the usual kitchen grease fire. About five arson investigators guarded the front door only letting in authorized personal enter the building.
