Hanukkah Bites

Tiny LED MenorahEarlier this week on LAist we passed on a treasured recipe for latkes, and two Hanukkahs ago we ran the closest thing to my late Grandpa (AKA "The Latke King")'s recipe. Latkes (potato pancakes) are a tasty and traditional food long associated with the holiday of Hanukkah, which rocks its halfway point at sundown tonight. But soaking up the oil that is at the core of the holiday isn't just something for members of the tribe; get thee to your kitchen, get out your frying gear, and grease up your weekend. We got turned on to this great collection of Hanukkah-oriented high-fat recipes from the folks at Chow.com, and wanted to share them with you before the last light on the menorah gets lit.

We're especially intrigued by Sara Dickerman's Potato-Turnip Duck-Fat Latkes (oy vey!) which happen to be the only non-pareve item in the set, as well as her Honey Fritters with Blood Oranges, and Radicchio, Apple, and Squash Tempura.

Of course, we join with the folks at the LAFD Blog in reminding revelers to be safe with your menorahs and their affiliated candles. And we also join those who wonder why Google has opted once again this year to not modify their homepage logo to honor the Jewish Festival of Lights. Just some food for thought. And a Happy Hanukkah to all!
