LAist Interview: Sweet P of Project Runway

Sweet P on Project Runway

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sweet P has designed club wear, sleepwear, and retro inspired pieces. She sites John Galliano, Marni, Chloe, Phillip Lim, and Balenciaga as favorite designers. Combined with her childhood love of Sonny and Cher and passion for surfing and motorcycles, she represents the fun side of Southern California culture. Her first Sweet P collection will be available in February 2008.

On Project Runway week one, Sweet P wowed the judges with her adorable baby-doll dress. Week two viewers she carefully navigated to kookie waters of working with Elisa on the Sarah Jessica Parker Bitten challenge. We watched in horror when Elisa claimed that she was 'imbuing the fabric with her essence' and used a spit-mark for a measurement. Even with the completely different work methods, Sweet P managed to help create one of the few inspired looks that week.

Elisa and Sweet P on Project RunwayI predict we will see her fun, classic, Southern California inspired designs for many weeks. Hopefully Sweet P, Rami Kashou and Kit Pistol end the show with an all LA final.

From the first week, Sweet P has navigated to rough waters of reality TV with grace. LAist asked her about her nickname, her signature style, and where she gets those amazing tattoos.

LAist: How did you get your nickname?

Sweet P: I was in an all girl motorcycle club and we all had nicknames like
Pig Pen, Wolf girl, Cross. I got mine because I am sweet. Corny, huh?

How would you describe your signature style?

Simple elegance.

What is the inspiration behind your Sweet P line?

I am constantly inspired by the world around me. I never pick a theme
or one inspiration. I usually start with colors and fabrics and the
silhouettes just start to spring out of my mind. The inspiration can
come from a homeless person or a flower - you never know.

Why did you want to be on Project Runway?

I literally just closed my business "Nest" the same week Jeffrey
Sebelia called and asked me to come to the audition. I said no. He
called again, I thought about it overnight and decided fear should not
stop me. I also found it a strange coincidence that I just quit my
business. I realized this could be an amazing opportunity to find a
financial backer or a fantastic design job. Or...who knows I am keeping
my mind open to new possibilities.

Sweet P at Mood on Project Runway

There are several LA designers on the show this season. The LA Times
called the show 'Project LA'. Did you know Rami Kashou, Kit Pistol,
or Simone LeBlanc before the show?

I knew who Rami was and had been at a good friends birthday party
that Simone attended as well. I was not friends with them yet though.
Now I am in love with Kit. I am also now friends with Rami and Simone as
well. Everyone on the show was awesome. I miss the designers who live in
New York, Chicago, Santa Fe and Texas.
