Today's Santa Anas to bring waves & rain this week

If you're looking for 20-25 ft. waves, you better at least head up to Point Conception or past Eureka for even higher ones. If 7-14 ft. waves are your style, then stay LA.

The surf will build throughout today and tonight, peaking Wednesday. By Thursday, the swell is expected to diminish into the 5- to 7-foot range, Seto said.

A rainstorm from the Northwest is expected Thursday through Saturday, bringing more than an inch of rain, Seto said. [LA Times]

The highest surf in LA County is expected to be found in Palos Verdes Peninsula, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach.

Despite the good surf, the combination of today's 15-25 mph winds and humidity drop are cause to be on alert for fire. I remember my bodyboarding youth, getting up at 5am, the air 55, the water 55 and paddling out into those 8 foot, hopeless, pointless closeout barrels at Westward Beach. You had to get in early with the wind blowing in your face, eyes closed from the spray blasting you in the face and just hope and will yourself into those awesome vertical drops, pull in and get about 5 seconds of enjoyment before the wall came down and sent you to the bottom to kiss the wet sand. Hands, ears and toes numb, shivering; trying to find the motivation as you get older is real tough. I'd rather be in bed than dodging 10 foot closeout sets in the winter waves. It's what being young is good for.
