Box Office Review: America is still Enchanted

Enchanted joined the small circle of films that have topped the box office over consecutive weekends this year. It brought in 17 million dollars, raising its cume to a healthy $70.6M. This Christmas was second to Enchanted once again. It made an extra $8.4M and--considering its meager $13M budget--is now a bona fide hit with a gross of $36.9M. Beowulf was third in its third week, adding $7.9M to its $68.6M worth of treasure. The weekend's only wide opener, Awake, finished a weak fourth with $6M, further eroding Jessica Alba's career.
Holdovers, obviously, reigned after that: Hitman ($5.8M/$30.2M), Fred Claus ($5.5M/$59.8M), August Rush ($5.1M/$20.3M), the great No Country for Old Men ($4.5M/$23M), Bee Movie ($4.5M/$117.6M) and American Gangster ($4.3M/$121.7M). The two prestige films opening in limited release this weekend were both big winners. The Savages opened to a per-theater average of $38,250 while The Diving Bell and the Butterfly averaged $25,100. The season's first blockbuster, The Golden Compass arrives this Friday.

Amy Adams was totally robbed of the Oscar a couple years back. I hear she's generating buzz again this year. Would you say her performance is worthy of it?

I certainly think she has a good chance of being nominated, but I'm not sure she'll be a winner this year. Ultimately, the frothy nature of Enchanted may undo her. Marion Cotillard is my favorite for La Vie en Rose and Keira Knightley is supposed to be very good in Atonement. Julie Christie is also a good bet for Away from Her.
