what exactly happens when they "present" a book?

The author discusses the book, then reads from it, then answers questions about it, then signs it. Usually. There are aberrations to every one of these options. Sometimes there is only a "signing" in which there is no reading or discussion of the book at all, you just line up to have it signed and that's it. Some writers don't sign at all - they just present. Others will answer questions and sign, but won't read from the book.

Unless we know for sure they are signing only, we typically use "present" to capture all these possible options.
