Last night I was out with my family going to dinner in downtown when we noticed the Christmas Tree was already up at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. They had a cherry picker going applying decorations. We walked over to check out out, and what did we see? Paint. 40 Gallons of Green Paint. I guess they could not find a tree just that right shade of green for Los Angeles.
More pictures after the jump.
It turns out that the 'paint' is GG-710 Christmas Tree and Greenery Fire Retardant. Normaly this retardant is clear and has no effect on the color of the tree. It can be tinted to give more color and 'lifelike' appearance to a tree. Are we so vain as a city that we need this? The tree belongs in the forest, or at least planted. If they are going to go to this extent, why not use a fake tree?

Yes Virginia, that Tree is wearing makeup.

The tree is unnaturally green.

Maybe it was a tribute to the recently deceased Michelangelo Antonioni.
They do that on all public Christmas trees. Go check out the tree at the Grove up close and you will see that it too will be painted green. Guess you cant realistically expect a tree not to brown being left outside for over a month.
perhaps painting a real tree to be fire-proof and to stay green consistently through-out the season is more cost effective than constructing a fake tree, and storing it somewhere year after year.
my question is, why not paint it some other color? i would have liked to see it painted up like a candy cane.
