LAPD Almost Institutionalizes Rascism, But Backs Off

The Los Angeles Police Department has decided against instituting a plan to "map" the city's Muslim communities, in what was being billed as a counter-terrorism effort. According to the LA Daily News:

"It's been put aside," said LAPD spokeswoman Mary Grady. "It became clear to us [that Muslim communities] were not comfortable with the word mapping and what they believed it meant: racial profiling."

Instead, Grady said the Los Angeles Police Department would build relationships with the Muslim community.

Don't you feel better? I do. They're going to build relationships! In other words, having discovered that the word "mapping" didn't focus group so well with the Muslim community, LAPD has found another spin for the same plan. Or, they're simply going to racially profile the Muslim community with a smile rather than a sneer.

The Daily News goes on:

The decision was welcomed by Muslim leaders who in a letter last week denounced the department after its head of counter-terrorism, Michael Downing, told Congress the LAPD embarked on the mapping to follow the influence of radical Muslims who push a "violent, ideologically based extremism."

Hmm...who else do we know who forwards a violent, ideological based agenda...it's funny, it sounds so familiar...oh! Maybe it was the administration that likened the Iraq war to the Crusades. Or maybe it's those Evangelical Christians who bomb abortion clinics and murder providers in the name of God. Or, the same Evangelicals that protest at the funerals of fallen soldiers with hateful anti-gay campaigns. With all these "violent, ideologically based extremist" groups, it looks like police nationwide have their mapping work cut out for them!

Wait. They compared the Iraq war to the Crusades? How?? When?? I need to know this.

Miss Pauline's outrage at this latest instance of racial profiling is understandable. As is its denouncement by all parties as racist and unconstructive.

But her comparison of U.S. christian radicals to their worldwide Islamist counterparts is a non-sequitur. The violent acts of a few fringe evangelicals, while alarming and sad, simply do not hold a votive candle to the width and breadth of a contemporary Muslim world aflame with the fundamentalist movement. Remember, adherents to the Qu'ran hate homosexuals and abortion clinics just like Evangelicals do -- and they number millions more.

While the fundamentalist Christian terrorists may not have shed as much blood as their Muslim counterparts, I think the comparison is fair.

What's the term? American Taliban? The two have a lot in common, including their attitudes towards killing for their cause, treatment of women, hatred of homosexuals and desire for the merging of church and state.

No, I'd say the comparison is completely fair.

Aye, that's my picture! Cool!

Why would the LAPD want to do what has already been done? This map data is available in the private sector now.

As we struggle to know our domestic enemies. No, matter your political party affiliation, and setting aside your thoughts on issues. We all need to remember what it is to be an American Citizen. By the way a religion is NOT a race. How incompetent!!
