Racists at the OC Register

Picture%203.png
Bunch of savages in the OC

Not everyone in Orange County is a rich white racist, but I'd wager that every rich white racist in Orange County passes his weekend at OCregister.com. Case in point: Clicking through my RSS – gotta keep up with our neighbors to the south – I read a long-enough-for-the-Register blurb about a stabbing in Fullerton. Then I scrolled down to the comments section, where I found the doozy posted above.

Of course, it didn't come as a shock; I read Register comments half hoping to find gems like that. The paper teeters precariously between desperately needing the traffic generated by user comments and trying to uphold some last shred of journalistic dignity. (If you read the comments on their illegal immigration stories, you'll see just how well that's working out.) Online rants aren't generally newsworthy, but this one helps illustrate the compromises our local papers are making as their circulations decline and they turn to the web for revenue.

The Register's well aware of their problem, too. A former Freedom Communications intern told me the other day that, when not assisting with stories, interns at the Reg are charged with expunging racist, libelous, and otherwise unsavory comments from their pages.

Better than making coffee runs, I guess.

Thanks for bringing attention to this. Immigration stories in the Register website really bring out the ugly side of OC.

i know people who blog aren't always the brightest people, but come on...

isn't "rich white racist" as racist and stereotyping as "you can't take the santa ana out of the mexican"?

OH NOSSSSS they said MEXICAN. me and my photojournalism sensibilities are offended!

PS - neither is racist. but they are both bad attempts at saying something clever.

I really love LAist, am a regular reader, but was surprised to see this waste of space. You sound truly offended by the Register's existence.

Yeah, there are rich white racists in Orange County, and Los Angeles. There are also tons of illegal immigrants here who don't speak a word of English. Media outlets are constantly editing and phrasing content to get its point across. (see title above, Racists at the OC Register) ...and people say stupid things on comment boards, that yes, sometimes need to be edited or completely removed. And you think this is isolated to the OC??????? Right. Anyways, this is all really old news.

BTW, you are lacking a strong source to support your assertion that the OC Register is aware of the problem. Why don't you get on the phone and quote one of the editors or publishers over there as opposed to your friend, sorry, EX-intern at Freedom. EX-Intern??? C'mon...LAist. Stick to what you do best...more stories on bad drivers, good food, music etc.

clearly youve never been an intern anywhere.

like pawns on the chessboard, they can go in any direction, and are often (foolishly) overlooked.

but thanks for your compliments about our food, music, and transportation coverage.
