Photo Essay: Sunrise over Lake Balboa

IMG_1517.jpg

When you drive north on Balboa from the 101, you may notice a constant stream of joggers and runners passing on the right. If you turn in the driveway there, you will stumble upon one of the valley's hidden gems. Lake Balboa was built in the 1990s (in Encino) and attracts a surprising array of birds and other small wildlife. Just before sunrise, a heavy fog blankets the area. As the sunrise approaches, the birds instinctively head east. You can hear their excitement build as the squawking and honking break into the peaceful silence.

For some reason, these photos make me envision a "Westside Story" type dance off between the bird gangs in the crowded lake.

I kind of felt emotional stirrings of the possibility of harmony between all peoples when I saw the various species all hanging out together, but it was just too embarassing to write.

(But my money would be on the pelicans. The Canadian geese are intense and have sharp beaks, but the pelicans have agility as well as size on their side).

Since I don't sleep much at night, i've been looking for a good place to watch the sunrise. LA being on the West doesn't have much when it comes to views of the east. The mountains are nice and all, but by the time the sun comes over, it's well past actual sunrise. Thanks for this.
