Box Office Review: Gangster robs theaters!

There was a welcome flight to quality this weekend as movie-goers finally gave some love to a good flick. American Gangster blasted its way to the top with an impressive haul of 46.3 million dollars. Bolstered by positive reviews and the stellar box-office power of Denzel Washington, Gangster should continue to thrive in the coming weeks. Jerry Seinfeld's initial foray into the motion picture business can certainly be called a success. Despite mediocre notices, Bee Movie pulled in $39.1M and looks to be a hit for DreamWorks Animation.

Hold-overs picked up the next four spots in the pecking order: Saw IV ($11M, $51M), Dan in Real Life ($8.1M, $22.9M), 30 Days of Night ($4.0M, $34.2M) and the oddly resilient The Game Plan ($3.8M, $81.9M). John Cusack's Martian Child was the latest disappointment from New Line, taking in a paltry $3.6M in its debut. After that it was Michael Clayton ($2.9M, $33.1M), Why Did I Get Married? ($2.7M, $51.1M) and Gone Baby Gone ($2.4M, $14.9M). In limited release, Darfur Now ($8000 per) and Joe Strummer ($10,200) were only average.
