very good comments, thanks. i prefer freeways so i can at least sleep on the way. in searching for this i found a very cool messenger service site with decent tips at www.a-1courier.com/shortcuts.htm

Wouldn't it be great if sigalert.com had construction zones on their site. that seems to be the real problem on LA surface streets. it's always something :)

Pfffft...

Everyone knows that the most efficient way to get around in Los Angeles is the highly effective freeway system. All us natives know the Freeway is always your best bet, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

So take it from me, a native: take the freeway, no matter how congested. It will always be quicker than the so-called "shortcuts." Why, that's the REASON all you lemmings transplants take it: it's just quicker.

Haha my dad hated that book too. #3 on your list is how I learned everything about driving. Since I was 10 I was paying attention to my dad's shortcuts and asking questions about street names and freeways so I could learn how to get around.

Oh my god, I just remembered that book! I haven't thought about it in forever. I had a boss who had it on her coffee table in a waiting area and was notorious for making people wait in there before meetings. I read it cover to cover but can't think of a single one now. I'm going to look on Amazon now. Great call polaroid girl!

Funny, yesterday when I saw the other shortcut post I had to sit on my hands to not post a comment along the lines of "Figure it out yourself just like I did" or "You must be insane if you think I'm going to post my secrets online" but that seemed so harsh and the only 2 comments at the time were trying to be helpful. I recall in the late 80s a book called "LA Shortcuts" came out and my dad was FURIOUS because it essentially killed all the good shortcuts. It is available on Amazon... it would be interesting to see if anything in that book is still useful!

Love it. Nice little rant/informative post. Kinda passive aggressive. I like it. :-) #3 on your list is exactly on the money. Pay attention while driving or even as a passenger and you can learn and do a lot to avoid traffic.
