Old man crashes into Gary Collins, only Collins is arrested

Drinks for a DUIHow does something like this happen? It happens when a sober person accidentally crashes into a drunk person.

"[Actor Gary Collins] was not at fault in the accident," [Officer] Harding said. "The other motorist failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with Collins' vehicle."

The actor's sports utility vehicle subsequently crashed into two parked cars, Harding said.

"Officers smelled alcohol on his breath and initiated a field sobriety test, which he failed," she said. Collins was uninjured. [KTLA]

Even the best of drunk drivers can't beat the system. Neener, neener, neener.

But seriously, this continues a strange pattern where our local law enforcement folk seem bent on arresting the least-likely people.

It started when that SUV hit that bicyclist in Beverly Hills and the Beverly Hills cops only gave a ticket to the bike rider. Then the cops went after LAist's servers to see if a threatening email matched up with one (or more) of the comments that were left on this fine blog.

Then there was the story of the Metro bus honking and then striking a bicyclist in Hollywood, and only the cyclist got hancuffed. Oh sorry, not only the cyclist, but also his wife.

So yes, it's bad that tee vee personality and native Los Angeleno Gary Collins was driving while legally drunk, but why on Earth wouldn't the old man get cited for causing the accident?

Must be some weird unwritten George Weller law that says that SUV drivers, busdrivers, and the elderly can crash into people with their vehicles and get away with it. Even if they kill innocent people.
