Lauren Bon's "Bees and Meat" Opening at Ace Gallery
Lauren Bon's, Not a Cornfield Project, created quite a stir in the art community. Saturday night her new exhibit "Bees and Meat" is bound to generate more talk. Bon will fill the vast Ace Gallery with sculptural pieces created from honey, bees, and lamb carcasses.
The "Bees and Meat sculptures involve the following items:
90 miles of irrigation stripping
33,000 pounds of dried “Not a Cornfield” corn kernels
Two working wild hives and over 10,000 live bees
A 10’ x 3’ aquarium of honey
A dried lamb carcass fountain
21 cornstalk bales standing 9’ tall
A gallery of honey jar chandeliers
A library of honey
1200 totems bundled in wood, cotton, and twine
Beeswax sculptures
A working study covered in tar
A corn maiden sculpture
Two bronze tanks oxidized on a sea voyage from Shanghai to Los Angeles
1000 whispered fears
Over 6,480 hours of “Not a Cornfield” audio and visual surveillance
24-hour, streaming audio of living bees in the gallery
Transplanted earth
The opening reception is this Saturday night from 8-10pm.

very american in that it wastes a lot of food--room full of corn kernels, honey-library. you'll never see such a thing in a place that would appreciate those things and put them to far better uses. this show is an exercise. not controversial, not profound, & hardly cogent.

this has very little to do with bon: that ace gallery guy--the bald, older fella--lost his temper. he was yelling at people for going in the corn while another gallery employee said it was okay to be in the corn. there was a misunderstanding.

I do agree that Lauren uses a myriad of materials, however she is also trying to emphasize the point of American usage through visual symbolism, and that will take a lot of waste in order to represent waste in its general meaning.
I appreciated the piece of land she took out in order to speak out for those who lost their community gardens in 2006. Go, Lauren.
