A mere eleven games into the season, the Kings have accomplished two feats they have not been able to muster since the 2005-06 season:
Beat the Dallas Stars.
Win three in a row.
A 2-1 victory tonight was enough to do both. The feats don't amount to much, but they are worth noting for a team that has had its share of (very) hard times in the rebuilding process that commenced last year. Furthermore, the Kings are swiftly pulling themselves out of the nice-sized hole they dug for themselves in the early going. After a 1-5 start, the Kings are suddenly 5-6 with a nice bit of momentum to take into the rest of their home stand.
Far from Tuesday night’s dominating performance, this game was never in the bag for the Kings. Big Bird LaBarbara had to come up big for the Kings, turning away 29 shots and only letting one close range bid get behind him. At full-strength, the Kings struggled in the defensive zone often. Jack Johnson looked more like a rook tonight than at any other time I’ve seen him, giving the puck away deep and taking a silly retaliation penalty. On the penalty-kill, however, the boys played out of their minds, with extra props going to Dustin Brown.
Word of the King’s early season woes seem to have suppressed stub sales a bit, but the Thursday night crowd made up for empty seats by starting the weekend early - beers were in the air as plentifully as the “fuck you Turco” shouts. Nothing like a scrappy, hard-hitting Kings win to fire you up for postgame at Hotel Fig or the Standard. Cheers to the Kings, big ups to the Thursday night rowdy bunch, and here’s to Saturday’s shot at .500.
