Local Athletes Feel The Burn
The Dan Patrick radio show recently debuted in Southern California (check 570 KLAC in the mornings), but this isn't what he meant by "En Fuego."
While often immune to the real world, local sports have been impacted by the disaster in several ways. Of course, let's keep this all in perspective ... the real losses are to the families and the real heroes are the firefighters.
- The San Diego Chargers are practicing in Arizona and may have to play their next game there, as over ten thousand evacuees are currently camping out in Qualcomm Stadium.
- The Lakers-Jazz preseason game scheduled for San Diego on Thursday has been canceled.
- Pepperdine's homecoming weekend was wrecked. Practices and games were canceled, and players returning from road games couldn't get back to campus.
- USC practices have been altered by the bad air quality.
- Saturday's San Diego State-BYU football game has been postponed until December 1.
- The Mountain West Conference cross country championships have been moved from San Diego to Albuquerque, New Mexico (the same thing happened in 2003).
- Several other San Diego college teams are making schedule changes.
- In Manhattan Beach, city rec league games were canceled due to the air quality.
- While it's early to say now, many professional athletes are known to reside in the ritzy areas that are currently smoldering. We've heard of both NFL and MLB players being forced to evacuate, but details are limited at this time.

I play Manhattan Beach co-ed softball. Wow, we're mentioned in the same post as the Chargers and USC football.
