Larry Himmel Reports from the Scene of his Burning Home

Larry Himmel is CBS8 San Diego's neighborhood guy -- the personable reporter with the know-how, the hip tips, and just enough wackiness to make any story interesting -- a sort of Huell Howser of the deep southland. But in nearly 30 years of entertaining San Diegans with stories of local and human interest, nothing could have been more personal -- or painful for Himmel than his on location report this afternoon, from the site of his burning home near Rancho Santa Fe.

Himmel returned later in the day to walk through the smoldering remains. Watch the vid after the jump.

this is great - thanks for posting it

incredible Andy, really good!

Thanks for posting this. I grew up in San Diego, and moved back here after many years in LA. This fire situation is crazy, and it was surreal watching that Larry Himmel video. My thoughts and prayers go out to Larry, and all others directly affected by this madness.

That poor guy. Just heard from some friends who are all packed up and ready for evacuation. Their homes are okay, but the ash is heavy in the air. They're driving to Qualcomm today to see if they can drop off water to the people who are already there.

Andy incredible. Thanks for finding this and posting it.

What a pro. Standing in the devastation of his residence I love how in the second clip he gives reassurance to any listeners from the neighboring areas that their homes are OK.

Awesome clip.

That is heartbreaking. What a brave and professional man...I would have lost it. Well done and best wishes to him and his family, I am sorry for their loss, but grateful that the family is alright.

For those of you looking to help and those evacuating, etc, one of the best and busiest feeds I've seen for up-to-the-minute info and needs (i.e. last night, Qualcomm didn't need food, they needed sleeping bags, other stuff) is Nate Ritter's Twitter. Incredible work/service, Nate!

Sad...I remember watching him as a kid.
