30 New Left Turn Arrows in 30 (Business) Days

View Larger Map NOTE: One approach equals one left turn signal, some intersections have more then one new left turn arrow. One left turn signal can cost up to $80,000.

Mayor Villaraigosa is making sure his recent replacement at the Department of Transportation is a good choice. Today, they announced the 30/30 program:

LADOT will install and activate 30 left turn arrows in 30 business days at some of the City’s most congested and bottlenecked intersections. LADOT will complete installation of these signals by Monday, December 3.

Designed to improve the flow of traffic and improve safety on City streets, the 30/30 plan will cut excessive wait times at left turn pockets, decrease traffic collisions by up to 66 percent and reduce commute times for LA drivers. The new signals will be placed at intersections throughout the San Fernando Valley, on the Westside and near the Airport. [via a Mayor's Office press release]

“This 30/30 initiative will fundamentally transform the way traffic flows through the City’s major corridors and intersections,” Mayor Villaraigosa said today. “This bold and innovative program attacks the problem of traffic head-on and represents the opening bell in our race to reduce congestion.” This will make 219 new left turn arrows since Villaraigosa took office.

Ah, finally the revolutionary traffic mitigation plans we've been waiting for.

NOT

I can't believe they're not adding one at Franklin and Argyle.

Right now there's an _effective_ left turn arrow if you're heading south on Argyle at that intersection - when your light turns green, oncoming traffic has a red. But no left turn signal. I've never seen that before.

I'm now habituated to making the left as soon as the light changes. If they ever change it, or install an actual left-turn signal, there are going to be head-on collisions for sure.

ahh finally bev and fairfax...that should only minorly amerliorate the traffic caused at all hours of the from CBS, Farmers market, etc...

thanks zach!

oops, i meant all hours of the day... i was just too excited i guess

NOTI don't think it was intended to be revolutionary. Yet many small steps builds up to big solutions. Hopefully we will see another 30/30 in the FY Quarter 3 (Jan - Mar) for the city as well.

Alameda and Los Angeles? Huh? It already has an arrow!

How about Alameda (south) to Cesar Chavez (east)??

LA is such a virgo. Never capable of working the big picture while micro-managing its way out of problems. This city was never meant to be a "great" city.
