Watt's Pic of the Week

watt_before_pedaling_150.jpgI think a lot of people imagine San Pedro as a gray town at the end of the freeway. Oil tankers, canneries, and smokestacks make up the landscape of Pedro. What I like about Mike Watt's pictures is that they show you the color.

When I look at this photograph, I can smell the ropes, damp with saltwater. It makes me think about my dad's Chinese junk he kept docked in San Pedro. It was probably in dry dock more than it was in the water, but when we would take it out, it was magic. Sometimes we took it out to Catalina, and sometimes we just stayed overnight at the dock. This picture reminds me of what it felt like to wake up on the deck of a boat to the sound of seagulls.
