Late Night Eats: Nova Express Cafe

Nova Express Cafe in Fairfax Village

Attention space cadets, men in black and intergalactic babes, your resistance to snack attacks of insomnia are not to be heeded. Point your ship towards Fairfax Village and prepare to wine and dine in the alien kitsched, mellowed out, droid welcoming version of the Mos Eisley Cantina at Nova Express Cafe.

Open six nights a week (no Mondays) starting at 7 p.m., Nova stays open until 2 a.m. Sundays through Wednesdays, 3.am. on Thursdays and 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Alien servers are relaxed, so if you are in a light speed hurry to eat and run, use your tractor beams to draw them to your table. Liquids range from wines, beers, martinis (with appropriate names such as the cosmicpolitan) to teas, espressos and shakes (soy milk requests honored).

The full menu is served 'til closing and mainly features cosmic pizzas with homemade dough (nothing special) and honey red sauce (delicious!) -- all served on U.F.O. pizza trays (see video). Alternative veggie or vegan cheese is available on full pizzas, but not on slices (cheese may or may not be vegan, most wait staff at restaurants do not know that soy cheese occasionally carries the animal products [casein or whey] depending on the brand].

If available, try the empanadas for your appetizer, if not, the spicy cajun fries or homemade foccacia Nova Bread with parmesan dipping sauce are excellent starters. If you order a salad (and we recommend the spinach based Solar Flare with tofu and the house vinaigrette, which is some of the best dressing we've ever had), skip the farinaceous appetizers as all celestial salads come with Nova Bread automatically. If pizza is not your thing, try the sandwiches, excuse us, Galactic Neutrinos. Vegetarian, cheese, turkey, chicken and peanut butter/honey are all available for orbital consumption.

Nova Express Cafe is an excellent, fun and weird way to munch-a-bunch in a hyper-colored dark room. Occasionally, live music and DJs will fill the aural limits, otherwise, the sonic boom box will play music from beyond.

If you don't eat the food, the alien will eat you!Earthport

This place has frightened me from investigation for years, despite nearly weekly trips to the Kibitz Room at Canter's. Now that I know it's a pizza joint, I might check it out.

haha, I love that this place can "frighten" people. Yeah, give it a try, it's fun and kooky.

it's not exactly a pizza joint -- it's got everything....i like to go and just snack on chips and salsa. it's also great in the summer after an evening at Hollywood Forever.

I'm a devoted customer to Nova. Their "Nova Bread" is amazing...it's just something you have to try when you eat there and also their sandwiches are amazing good. But just like going to Johnnie's Pastrami and Titos, you have to make a judgement call when on Fairfax between Canters and Nova....

Great food. Perhaps the best on Fairfax. But this place has the WORST SERVICE IN THE GALAXY. Surly, slow, almost surreal in its ineptitude.
