The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies each played 162 games and needed one more game to decide who would clinch the wild card. And both teams played like they wanted to win it.
I decided early on that I would cheer for the Rockies. I mean since the Dodgers decided to tank in the last two weeks of the season and give the Rockies seven of their 13 wins, the Rockies better make the most of it right?
Jake Peavy started for the Padres pitching very un-Peavy-like. He went 6 1/3 innings but gave up six earned runs on 10 hits including two homers.
By the eighth inning it became a 6-6 stalemate until the eventful 13th inning.
The Rockies sent Jorge Julio to the mound who promptly gave up a single to Brian Giles and a homer to Scott Hairston to send the Padres up 8-6. The Padres then send out their closer Trevor Hoffman to close out the game.
So lights out, game over right? Not by a longshot. I had a hunch Hoffman would be ripe to blow a save since he had been warming up several times during the game when the Padres threatened to take the lead. Getting up, stretching, throwing, sitting down, and repeating that several times must take something out of a pitcher.
And so it did.
Kaz Matsui doubled, Troy Tulowitzki doubled scoring Matsui and Matt Holliday tripled to score Tulowitzki and tying the game. Save blown.
After intentionally walking Todd Helton, Jamey Carroll hit a sacrifice fly to Brian Giles who mustered all of his strength to throw down a face-sliding Holliday at home plate. The question for the coming years will be, "Did Holliday touch home plate?"
Regardless he was called safe, and the Rockies won the game 9-8.
The Rockies will be going to their second postseason in franchise history. They face the Phillies in the National League Divisional Series. I don't know if they will win or not, but they have already made this October very exciting.
By the way, the red streak on Holliday's chin isn't a retarded dyed soulpatch that looks like a period as sported by Scott Spezio (pictured right). Spezio is such a fucking douchebag.
When I said that Holliday slid on his face, I meant it. He had to be helped off the field after the game, but it looks like he go ok quite quickly.
I'll be back tomorrow with my closing thoughts on the Dodgers and my nominees for the season awards.

hell i was even rooting for SD so i could easilly mosey down there for the NL championships to see my cubbies get into the world series, and yet the rockies earned that win and it was
