Ducks 4, Kings 1 - After Los Angeles shocked Anaheim 4-1 in Saturday's season opener in London (yes, London), the defending champs showed who really is king. Despite 10 goals in two days, British fans were reportedly most excited about a good ol' fashioned hockey fight. Welcome back, NHL. Welcome back.
A's 3, Angels 2 - The AL West champion Halos hit a skid when they clinched the pennant, but they saved face in their final series. They picked up two wins against Oakland despite dropping the finale on Sunday. Jered Weaver pitched well in the loss, which is a good omen heading into their series against Boston (who, unfortunately, has home field advantage). Orlando Cabrera, Gary Matthews Jr. and Garret Anderson all took the day off for some much needed pre-playoff rest.
Giants 11, Dodgers 2 - One of the greatest rivalries in sports was disgraced in this game, series, and season by two craptastic teams. Barry Zito improved his record to 11-13, demonstrating why San Francisco burned $126 million on the former USC star. It was the Giant's worst season in 11 years.
Los Angeles completed a second half meltdown, losing 11 of their final 14 games and disappearing from the playoff hunt ... Omar Vizquel hit a rare home run, and that's why we're giving him this photo placement on an LA blog. If you don't know why, you should watch more baseball and respect your elders (apparently Jeff Kent thinks that was the Dodger's problem, anyway) ... Dodger owner Frank McCourt announced that GM Ned Colletti and manager Grady Little would return next year. Despite a dismal showing on the field, the Dodgers shattered season attendance records with 3,857,036 on the year.
Galaxy 2, Crew 1 - The Galaxy are getting hot and it couldn't be happening at a better time. They've won three in a row (and tied the one before) and miraculously are still in the playoff hunt. While Beckham's season ended before it really began (knee injury), most of LA's games were crammed late in the season to accommodate his schedule. If the team stays hot, they could squeak into the playoffs without him.
Elsewhere - Since chemical tests don't seem to do the trick, bodybuilders are being pitted against the polygraph ... LSU jumped USC in the media poll, but the Trojans still dominate the coaches. There's that east coast bias we've been missing! ... San Francisco finds a way to unite an even suckier team in Phoneboth Park: Barry Manalow and Brian Boitano ... Garry Kasparov wants to be Russia's next president. Long way to checkmate.
Today's Action - San Diego @ Colorado (4:37pm) for a one game playoff to see who gets the wild card ... Lakers media day is today in El Segundo, then they'll hop a plane for training camp in Hawaii. Kobe is expected to report ... The Clippers will hold training camp in exotic Santa Barbara. Party in IV, baby!
