When Crazy Girls closed down about two years ago, it flooded the market with bikini dancers and ended a great run as one of the older strip clubs in Hollywood.
Presumably, that was it for them, leaving Jumbo’s Clown Room and Cheetah’s to pick up the slack. But two weeks ago, the neon signs turned back on, and Crazy Girls opened its doors again.
During its hiatus, management changed hands, and as I found out when I checked it out on Thursday, the new owners have a different vision for their baby than the dive bar it used to be.
The doorman was the first hint that the place is going for a classier vibe. Decked out in a full three-piece suit and an earpiece, he chattered into his mini-microphone while scrutinizing my ID before nodding me in.
A pretty Asian girl in a bustier and hotpants was sitting behind a cash register and cheerfully collecting cover charge on the way in -- $10 for both men and women. I walked over to the bar to order some whiskey and soak up the scene.
New red paint, plush red booths, and a heart cut out of the wall to mark the location of the lap dance room make the club look like the inside of a Valentine’s Day card. The idea is clearly romance, Austin Powers style. A mini-stage that resembles a poker table with a pole sticking out of it has replaced the former pool table, and the DJ booth is now lit up and in full view rather than being hidden by a ratty black curtain.
The club has kept its flavor with the girls, though. There were about ten dancers working, all characteristically hot. The first girl I saw onstage wore a corset that cinched her waist to nearly Scarlett O’Hara proportions and pressed her breasts cartoonish-ly up and together. She sauntered down the main stage, which runs along the north-facing wall and forms an L shape into the middle of the room, for two songs.
Following her, a leggy girl with dreads slinked across the stage and slid slowly down the pole -- in order to land in front of a guy sitting at the tip rail and sleeping. She proceeded to nudge him and stomp the stage in front of him with her stiletto-clad foot. Later, a raver-looking girl with bleached blonde hair pretty much made the night by twitching around, unironically, to “America – Fuck Yeah". She even sang along.
They haven’t quite hit their stride with customers – only a few tables were occupied, although two or three guys were steadily going back for private dances. Crazy Girls is planning a grand opening next month, so look out for coverage from us. In the meantime, get those dollars out and help the ladies drum up some business!

This is great news...the reason that the clubs in and around Hollywood had not been doing as well is that Vice decided to enforce the no-stripping-to-pasties law, which meant the ladies had to keep their bras on, which meant the gentlemen went elsewhere (i.e. to the no-alcohol clubs where there's complete nudity) and the ladies either made much less in tips or also changed locations. Not sure where things are with that right now -- I know that Jumbo's owners were trying to fight it.
I heard a rumor a while ago they were turning this place into a Starbucks. So much for getting a lap dance with my white chocolate mocha.

...i thought Crazy Girls was a fully nude bar. hmmm. wells, Cheetah's is still my fave. i might check this place out after reopening.
