Last Sunday, September 23rd, Dr. Jane Goodall head-lined the International Day of Peace with Roots and Shoots, a global network of youth dedicated to protecting human rights through environment-centered campaigns. Children marched with giant home-made peace puppets as environment and human rights organizations were on hand to provide information and network with locals. Goodall mingled for a while, greeting children and petting dogs before leading the Peace Dove marchers through Griffith Park. After demonstrating chimpanzee vocalizations which were met with cheers from attendees, Dr. Goodall eloquently spoke of the devastating environmental impact humans have had on the planet; the disconnect between mind and heart and the consequences of war; her work with the United Nations and within refugee camps; and the origins of the Peace Day celebration in Los Angeles, among other things. Here are some pictures of the event just in case you missed it:

Million Trees Los Angeles participated in the Peace Day celebration and gave away free olive trees for Los Angeles county residents to plant at home because trees provide shade, clean the air, purify our water, and beautify neighborhoods. You can get your own free trees (up to eight) by contacting the LADWP's Green LA Program.

The event was decorated with these banners made by kids who are pissed-off by the grown-ups who are screwing up the planet with pollution and war.

You just whined "oh...he's sooo cute," didn't you? This little guy attended the event with the Downtown Dog Rescue, an organization that assists homeless dog owners to spay/neuter, vaccinate, provide crisis care, and find adoptive homes for homeless pets. Downtown Dog Rescue was founded ten years ago among the encampments on Skid Row and is the only organization of its kind in the United States.

This mom has it going on! These kids know how to save the planet with style.

Goodall spoke about the first Peace Day in Los Angeles -- she and kickboxer/community organizer Blinky Rodriguez of Communities in Schools wanted to celebrate a gang truce.
