Thai One On: Vim

1415369200_2d63583240_o.jpgStraddled along Hollywood Boulevard, right before Los Feliz, Vim is one of those places I should have been going to a long time ago - dirt cheap and fucking delicious. It's tucked away in a little strip mall that has some weird bakery (not sure if it was Armenian or not) and another little eatery to the left of it.

I hear the place is most often frequented by Latino/Hispanic families but it was pretty bare when I got there on a Tuesday evening. Maybe two families and a couple. The menu is partially in Spanish and it's cash only. I had to go on the hunt for an ATM down the street which took a while, but it was worth it.

I didn't get to eat much, but what I had, I freaking loved. I would have been more comprehensive had I had my roommate in tow - she's a Thai food freak, unfortunately, that wasn't possible. Thai food isn't on my top three lists of favorites but Vim is subject to change my mind.

The atmosphere was sparse and pretty no frills. The waiter, basically offered no conversation, but was very polite though a tad bit pushy in getting my initial order. So, take it as a cop out if you must, but I wasn't entirely comfy taking pics in the restaurant, though I sneaked a few...with a Helio, so that should explain that.

The first thing I ordered was a Corona when I just about flipped out because beers were $2 each (this may not come as a surprise to a lot of folks but definitely to me - like I said, this is a place I should have been coming to a long time ago).

1415374508_37cea70315_o.jpg The first dish I ordered was the Wonton Soup with King Crab Meat (right around 5 bucks or so) because I heard the soup was supposed to be amazing and the portion was huge! I ate the soup for about 3 - 4 days after. The broth was light and a bit sweet with bok choy and chives and the wontons were awesome and a bit of a surprise. I'm from Louisiana and a seafood freak so I thought the highlight of the dish would be the crab meat. Nope.

Next, I ordered the glass noodles with eggs and shrimp (about 6 bucks). Here's what I found throughout my short little life: you can never go wrong with eggs and shrimp. And I've had only limited experiences with glass noodles, working in as a pastry cook on Sunset in a sushi restaurant, but they were always good. So I said what the hell.

Again, another huge portion. My roommate and I just finished the last of it off the day before yesterday (and I went to Vim the beginning of last week...). Smelled a little funny but it was still so good, we risked food poisoning anyway. A steaming bowl of mushrooms, chives, white onions, shrimp (with the tails on, which I usually dislike, too much work) and eggs. Heaven.

I would most definitely suggest going there to anyone, as I will be a frequent guest in the future. I am a student on a budget. In total, with the tip, I spent $21 and had food left over for days after. Just make sure to bring cash. Oh, and be on the look out for a little black chick reading Tony Robbins and drinking a beer. If you see her, say hi.
