I'm familiar with the work (as well as DF Wallace's more lengthy fiction and his mathematical treatises); as the lobster is actually far more closely related to the common cockroach than it is to a fish or mammal, I have some issues with his ascribing "sentience" to the lobster (he himself points out that lobsters are essentially "giant sea-bugs").

Furthermore, science is still up in the air as to the abilities of lobsters to "sense" pain -- (and in my own view of the matter, it's downright silly to privilege the lobster's so-called "pain" over the sustenance of the human race).

See Alton Brown's TV show or Jeffrey Steingarten's works for a more rigorously scientific consideration of the related biological issues. also, in a Norwegian study done more recently than Wallace's "article," scientists found that:

"crabs and lobsters have only about 100,000 neurons, compared with 100bn in people and other vertebrates. While this allows them to react to threatening stimuli, he said there is no evidence they feel pain."

Read "Consider the Lobster" by David Foster Wallace about a similar event.

san pedro was full of incredible restaurants in the 50's (cigo's, peppy's) but then in the 80's there was the heavenly nam's red door frequented by bukowski...all of 15 or 20 seats and food that was to die for. really fond memories of san peedro before the redevelopment took away some of the seediness. the climate was always interesting on the peninsula also.
