Are you Green with Envi?

Tonight at the Shrine Auditorium, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will bestow the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards. This year the Academy has launched their Green With Emmy Campaign. The event features the use of alternative fuel sources for deliveries, hybrid vehicles for talent, recycled paper, a set created from mostly rentals with less construction and waste, staff tuxedo will be dry cleaned with eco friendly solutions and not covered in plastic bags, and an energy audit of the Shrine Auditorium to move towards being more energy efficient. What I want to know is if the women of Grey Anatomy are going to wear organic evening gowns and how many millions of dollars in jewels have they borrowed for their big night.

Every time a major award show comes around, we mere mortals hear tales of celebrities being lavished with loads of swag. The gift bags for nominees and presenters seems to get larger and more controversial each year. Leading up to the awards, companies compete to introduce their products to stars and the people that surround them. A friend who is a longtime entertainment editor at E! let me tag along with her to an Emmy gift suite the Peninsula Hotel. As I pulled into the hotel, I mentioned the Emmy event and was immediately offered complimentary valet parking. So far so good.

Once inside, our names were checked off on the list and we were introduced to our personal concierge to escort us through the gift lounge to meet the vendors. As we walk into the hotel suite, we see the carpet was covered in very fancy fake grass. Hearts On Fire diamonds let my friend try on a huge diamond cuff. Soon were were being offered some environmentally friendly swag. The first suite included Veev Acai Liqueur, PUR water filters, Eco Bags, Billboard 2 Swag (a company that makes tote-bags and other items out of billboards), and AGL Grass. Two Vespa's were parked on the middle of the room. We were reminded that a Vespa needs much less gas than a car. One was equipped with $20,000 worth of Heart of Fire diamonds embedded in the side mirrors and will be auctioned off at the Environmental Media Association event next month. Mario Lopez won the other one.

Instead of grabbing everything in sight, I accepted items that I would donate to a silent auction that I am working on for the Virginia Avenue Project, an afterschool mentoring program for at risk kids. So thanks to Veev, PUR, P.J. Savage and Cargo makeup for the auction items. (I wonder if I can get the Vespa people on board.) Also thanks to Billboard 2 Swag for the "So You Think You Can Dance" wallet. My eight year old daughter loves it.

If you want to know if any celebs were in attendance, I saw clipboards for Extra, Entertainment Tonight, and some other shows. That day Carnie Wilson was the most famous person in the room. Maybe I should have headed to The Platinum Guild International's Jewelry Preview. The cast of The Office and Greg Grunberg from Heroes were there. Now where did Hugh Laurie get his Emmy swag and why wasn't the entire cast of "Friday Night Lights" nominated?
