Christian churches who recommend tithing and ignore all the other ancient customs (animal sacrifices, etc) make me question them as a Christian.

With that said - happy 5768 to my Jewish friends!

Thanks for the tip to the Chai Center, I'll check it out. Wish I'd known about the Writers Guild event yesterday, so I could have gone. The $500 fee or "ticket" that is typical for this service and Yom Kippur is ridiculous, and puts Jews in a bad light.

Christians never charge for Christmas or Easter, just pass the plate around, and everyone is supposed to give what they can or want to (although churches do encourage members to "tithe" the biblical 10%). This brings in the twice-a-year Christians, giving the churches a chance to pass our their info about year-round programs and maybe catch some recruits. But it's all very low-key and free.

That would be a better idea for all Jews, sounds like Chai Center is onto it. (I'm told that in Israel, temples don't charge a flat fee, either.)
