TV Junkie: Wednesday Picks
Introducing the TV Junkie Black List: While waiting for Spoon to go on the Tonight Show last night I had to endure Leno and guest Denis Leary talking about how they'd like to get cyclists off the roads and how they enjoy honking at them, etc. Both of these a-holes know* what went down recently in Beverly Hills as reported by LAist and the last thing LA needs is more SUV drivers feeling justified in mowing down anything else that isn't in an SUV. LAist knows people who not only recreate on bikes but are dependent upon them for transportation. Ignorant and uninformed opinions that put people in danger will not enjoy promotion by TV Junkie. Congrats to Denis Leary and Jay Leno, TV Junkie will not report on or list either of your programs or any other program you appear on from now through the end of the year. We'll reassess the situation after our New Years' hangover wears off.
9:00pm Countdown With Keith Olbermann MSNBC - After this week's Petraeus bullshit I gotta get some Keith.
9:00pm Code Monkeys G4 - A coupla new episodes in G4's pixelated series.
10:00pm Top Chef "Snacks on a Plane" BRAVO - The chefs join the mile-high meal club; guest judge Jimmy Canora.
11:00pm The Daily Show With Jon Stewart COMEDYCENTRAL - Guest Robert Draper, author of Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush
11:35pm Late Show With David Letterman CBS - Viggo Mortensen; Kat Von D; NASCAR stars present the Top 10 List; Daughtry performs.
12:35am Late Night With Conan O'Brien NBC - Stickfigure Mary-Kate Olsen; actor Wayne Brady; Lyle Lovett performs.
* While LAist.com doesn't conclusively know whether or not Leno and Leary have been following LAist's coverage of the Beverly Hills event we're making this assumption because, gosh darn it, Leno and Leary want us to feel like they are the kind of hipsters who are in the know about everything. Denis Leary aspouses and vents about everything because he knows about everything. Thanks for being a know-it-all Denis.

"Both of these a-holes know what went down recently in Beverly Hills as reported by LAist"
How do you know this? Did they specically mention the Beverly Hills incident?
[ report this ]
Ooooooo... Glad I missed that Leno/Leary meeting of the minds on bicyclists. I'd put a pox on both their houses if I wasn't already boycotting their shows.
[ report this ]
why would you assume they know about this obscure little incident in beverly hills? i didn't. also, bytheby, it was a joke.
[ report this ]
Yes, because Leary has created his shows and comedy sketches around his heartfelt and caring attitudes.
Way to make the mature decision to boycott listing a great show (Rescue Me) because one of the actors has an opinion. What if the other 8 people in the ensamble cast are bike riders?

The TV Junkie does what he does, and need not explain. And here you all are, whining that you don't care for his gracious explanation.
damned ingrates.
Is not getting jay leno or dennis leary updates really so bad? i think this decision by the tv junkie is a wise one.
and i support it 100%.

Leary ripped off his entire persona from Bill Hicks.

Honestly, Leno's always been a tool, be it for giving Ahnold a constant source of free publicity or for not giving a crap about LA. My out-of-town parents visited and they wanted tickets to see him... I'm in a wheelchair and the entire time there was miserable, it was clear that above all they were simply annoyed at having to deal with the wheelchair.
If I have to watch a late show, it's either Letterman or Kimmel. Letterman is really involved in NYC (I lived there for a time) and Kimmel isn't near as much of a douche. Leno, however, well, to say he has a big head is accurate in a lot of ways.

Leno is not nor has never been funny.
To me, he's always just been the guy from the Doritos commercials and as far as I'm concerned they can't pass the torch to Conan soon enough.

Thanks for your support and for reading. "Rescue Me" is a Leary show - it's all Leary, haven't you noticed? I feel sorry for the other actors that have to work with him. "Rescue Me" and Leno won't suffer at all from TV Junkie not tracking them - I just don't feel like devoting any space to them.
Leno and Leary didn't specifically mention the Beverly Hills incident but the incident had much wider press than LAist's coverage. Leno and Leary did specifically mention being inconvenienced by the LA Triathlon and they thought it would be funny to "pretend" that they were on Mulholland Drive and honking at competitors to get off the road. Their idiotic commentary followed.
Jay Leno makes a living trying to present ideas that he thinks the the average American would like. He goes for the lowest common denominator and if that means presenting a really shitty and threatening attitude towards cyclist, then so be it - he's made his money for the night.
Denis Leary is Denis Leary. He can go smoke himself to death - please hurry it up man. But don't encourage already ignorant drivers to endanger others.
Also, I don't think that there could have been an uglier pairing of individuals - and the ugliness is more than skin deep.

"The TV Junkie does what he does, and need not explain."
Is that your editorial policy?
The question still remains, what is tomdog's the source for the statement, "Both of these a-holes know what went down recently in Beverly Hills as reported by LAist?" I didn't watch the show. For all I know, Leary and Leno read the LAist post on the air. I'm just asking a question.
It's your blog. You can write (or not write) about whatever you want. But asking a writer the source of something published as fact doesn't make one an ingrate.

heres the thing about this post that drives me nuts. i come here for news and blog posts about los angeles. to that end, a regular tv roundup is pretty pointless but its not that big of a deal and even provides some utility as i dont check tv blogs every day... but this post is just part of the further douchification of LAist as it goes from being a constructive and positive voice about the Los Angeles community to a gripe blog run by people who can only see and discuss things from their own paradigm. sure, there is definitely a huge problem in that we dont have separate bike and car lanes, but how the hell has bike riding become this sacred cow to writers of a blog thats supposed to be about los angeles? something tells me there are more people in LA that drive cars than that ride bikes everyday. maybe people that drive cars have valid gripes about people in bikes. i know it drives me nuts every time im behind someone on a bike going down a narrow street and i have to slow down to 5 miles an hour so i dont kill him.
how is it that the more i read LAist, the more i feel like i dont belong here because i don't ride my bike everywhere, don't listen to Spoon and don't smoke pot everyday. LAist would do well by becoming less elitist, less cynical and more understanding of the differing lifestyles within LA instead of attempting to portray some sort of LA hipster lifestyle that i honestly cant imagine applies to 1/3rd of the people that read this site.
i say this because i like this site. i came here because i got sick of the cynical outlook on blogging.la. i love the dodgers. i eat thai food. i go to shows and movies. LAist is a great blog, but please stop with the constant cynical douchery.

"how is it that the more i read LAist, the more i feel like i dont belong here because i don't ride my bike everywhere, don't listen to Spoon and don't smoke pot everyday."
Seconded. A daily reminder of the great injustices the 7 bike riders in L.A. face is more than enough. Collect your medals and move on.

so we're douches because you dont listen to spoon.
got it.
ive got some mtv video awards pictures for you coming up.
i expect you both to hit that recommend button like fiends.
[ report this ]
tony, is it possible that theres a whole section of LA and readers of this blog that care neither about catty hipsterisms or mtv pop? maybe theres some gray area and its not just "cool informed people" vs. "mtv lemmings"?
[ report this ]
but of course thats possible.
what examples would you say fit into that whole section?
[ report this ]
Hey, LA people ... you may think LAist is slipping into douchery, but that's just because you don't live in Chicago. Chicagoist has turned into such a craptastic site full of baby hipster children who can't spell that I actually want to spend more time on LAist, a site for a city 2500 miles away I've only visited once. Sure, you have your douche article every now and again, but for the most part, LAist is a much stronger part of its community, presenting a much better feel for the LA atmosphere. I still love the neighborhood features (though I haven't seen one for a few weeks), and I love that the writers actually take the initiative. Chicagoist is all cut-and-paste from the Tribune or Sun-Times or Reader. LAist actually goes to meetings, interviews people, calls the cops to clarify things. I only WISH we had an -ist half as good.
You've got a good site here. Take care of it.

Come on Leary, honk at me and try to run me off the road. I dare you, punk. By the way, you still can't skate.

The problem with this post isn't some perceived hipper-than-thou attitude. The problem with this post is the accusation that "[b]oth of these a-holes know what went down recently in Beverly Hills as reported by LAist" isn't supported by the evidence that "Leno and Leary didn't specifically mention the Beverly Hills incident but the incident had much wider press than LAist's coverage."
It is perfectly appropriate for commenters to call out a writer for making an unsupported claim. It appears that tomdog simply guessed that Leno and Leary knew about the Beverly Hills incident. That's bad journalism, bad blogging, bad writing, and overall bad form. It's perfectly acceptable to criticize Leno and Leary for what they said about bicycles -- your just not allowed to make up facts.
What's even sadder is that the response from this site is a contributor calling commenters "ingrates" and the site's editor ignoring the issue in favor of some flame war about Spoon.
And Tony, stop patting yourself on the back about your MTV pictures. They're blurry and four days too late.
[ report this ]
Of course we don't postively know if the a-hole knew or not about the Beverly Hills incident but Leno certainly should have. At any rate, they did specifically mention cyclists associated with the LA Triathlon which LAist also covered. The supposition about whether or not Leno and Leary knew about the incident isn't what's outrageous about what TV Junky reported on. Get some perspective.

#18,
some of the problems with your critique is, besides being unsigned, anonymous, any whiney, of course
- wider coverage than LAist's? like who? who is bigger than Digg, and who did Digg point to?
- the gentleman said that posts about Spoon made him feel out of the loop and unhip, i invited him to get ready for our continuing MTV coverage, he flinched at that too saying that there is "a whole section" of music inbetween Spoon and MTV. i asked what artists would fit into that whole section. that question has yet to be answered - or cannot be answered because it was a false statement in the first place.
- as for the photos being "late" and blurry - i hadnt realized that i promised them to be up at a certain time, or in a style that you, anonymous, were guaranteed.
if you'd like for us to run your mtv red carpet photos that you posted minutes after the arrivals feel free to send them to me.

mea culpa folks - I made the appropriate edit to my post.

This is so simple folks. Just get Ed Begley Jr. on Leno's a** about this - they are reported friends, and as Ed is a biker I doubt he would be amused. I am sure Ed has an email address as he has that green tv gig now. Just let him know.
Besides, Rescue Me has gone way down hill from year 1-2 - it's a silly overblown soap now. Stopped watching as of the second epsd this year. So no harm done.

Yes.. they are really following your situation. You are delusional.
