It's the End of the Season As We Know It, And I Feel Fine

His Next Gig Is the Donkey Show in TJ
This has been a shitty night.

I watched the first couple of innings of the Padres-Dodgers game to watch newly acquired hack Esteban Loaiza completely stink it up. He game up four earned runs in those two innings and couldn’t find the strike zone for the life of him.

I then went to play some tennis with my new tennis partner. I couldn’t serve for the life of me, and my normally strong forehand kept on failing me. After losing the first set 6-0, I made a more respectable showing in the second set by going to the net losing 6-4. There hasn’t been more expletives hurled on a tennis court since John McEnroe last played on the tour.

I go back to my car, and I hear that the Dodgers are down 9-2 in the eighth inning.

The only positive part of the game was seeing Chin-Lung Hu go yard in his second major league at-bat against Brett Tomko. Does it make me a bad person that I started saying, “Fuck you Tomko,” over and over again when that happened? I didn’t think so.

The Dodgers made it interesting in the end, and the memory of last year’s September 18th game against Jake Peavy and the Padres percolated through my mind. But honestly I had no expectation that the Dodgers would have a night in the same area code as that game. Nothing the Dodgers had done recently would lend me to believe they can erase a two-run deficit much less a seven-run deficit.

Listening to the Dodgers Live crew after the game, they kept on stressing that the Dodgers still have a chance to make the postseason. They’re not wrong on that count. But I have about the same chance of being able to afford these pairs of Junya Watanabe pants and Prada pants without blinking an eye.

The Dodgers have squandered every chance they have had to gain some ground in the postseason chase. The scheduling gods smiled upon the Dodgers when they scheduled them to play the Giants in San Francisco before these crucial series against the Padres and D-Backs. The Dodgers had won 11 consecutive games there, so it would be a terrific opportunity!

Au contraire, mon frere. They completely tanked it missing the opportunity to come into this game only ½ a game behind the Padres.

So it’s done. I’m going to officially call it. After being uncharacteristically optimistic most of the season, I’m done with the charade. The Dodgers will not make the postseason. Even if by some miracle of Allah they make it, does anyone want to see them get swept yet again in the NLDS? I didn’t think so.

again grady little kills me.....it was obvious to everyone in the whole stadium that Loaiza didn't have anything last night. but it takes 6 runs for Grady to Pull him....against Jake Peavy?? Screw these guys...I wish i could jump ship and start rooting for Milwaukee but they kind of suck too.

Ditto to solracg. And you're right Jimmy for calling it over already.

But I'm so hardcore I'd love to see the Dodgers make it to the NLDS only to get swept any day. Hope is what being a Dodger fan is all about, that's all we've got!

I was just thinking about it. I went just over 20 games this season. With the money I spent, I could have bought one of those pairs of pants.

Henry, you're right. As much as I want to disown them, I can't. If they somehow make it to the postseason, I'll be there cheering them on.

And solracg, I really wish I could jump ship and root for another team. I've been on the verge of going to the Cubs bandwagon. But each time I'm about to do so, the Dodger fan in me pulls back. I can't do it. I think I have a condition.

yeah....I'm the same. It's like a script I keep repeating every season. I bitch about all the time i've wasted going to games and watching on tv, and they fall apart at the end of the season. I guess i should find comfort in that somewhere??

Just remember. All of that spent money this season went to paying such remarkable players like Esteban Loaiza, Mark Hendrickson and Brett Tomko.

Okay, Mr. Bramlett, let me get this straight. You're tired of the Dodgers losing all the time, so you're thinking of going with the CUBS?!? Are we talking the same Cubs, here, the 1908 World Champion Cubs?

See the flaw in your plan, here?

Guest #6, the Cubs have been awesome this season...

have you been watching?

And I was so happy 2 weeks ago when I heard the news that Grady had signed Tomko away...that I immediately went to the fridge and pounded 2 beers.

Tomko sucks balls. If any one player cost us the season it was him.

Henry ... #6 here. Yeah, I've been watching the Cubs, and to say they're awesome for not losing as quite often as the Brewers or the Cardinals isn't saying much. They might ... might ... manage to take the top spot in the worst division in baseball, depending on who happens to luck out in the last week. And even then, if they somehow do manage to make it to October, they'll be slaughtered by almost anyone they're likely to meet. They don't have a prayer against the Mets, for instance, and anybody in the West could take them ... including the Dodgers, I'm afraid.

The Cubs are much improved, and I expect them to be even better next year, but their momentary flirtation with decency is hardly worth having Mr. Bramlett abandon his Dodgers. If he feels like going all fair-weather, better he go with the Diamondbacks or San Diego. That's who we're going see lose to the Red Sox in the series.
