Spoon w/ Kool Keith @ Fonda, 9/10/07

Spoon at the Henry Fonda
It was an odd pairing of acts at the Creative Commons benefit presented by Wired Magazine with indie darlings Spoon headlining the first of three nights at the Fonda and underground hip hop legend Dr. Octagon aka Kool Keith opening. Billed as the kick off event for this weekends Wired NextFest, the show was dynamic and entertaining.

I will be brief as Joshua Pressman already gave a great review in his earlier post but I cannot give enough praise to Britt Daniels and Co. once again. It is getting a little ridiculous that this group isn't nearly as recognized as they should be. Now on their sixth studio album GaGaGaGaGa, Spoon are among the most consistent acts in rock today.

This was the second time I have seen them in the past two months and both times they have sounded tight and full, the addition of the brass section on their new tunes as well as some older songs adds an awesome(and loud) element to their sound. The set was based mainly from songs off Ga and Gimmie Fiction with classics mixed in along the way. Daniels has a certain coolness and charm at the front of the band that carries the group from song to song and does it without really saying anything in between songs, but just by rocking out.

Dr. Octagon opened with a brief and somewhat lackluster set, but was entertaining none the less. The crowd was somewhat apathetic to the performance as they were just waiting for Spoon. I was excited when I heard Kool Keith would be opening but was disappointed with the set.
