The Okie is not too spicy for a reason... it was created for/named for gabachos so they could eat something that wasn't too spicy for them and so they wouldn't choke on it! And, I doubt that everyone replied to Manuel's cry of "Merry Christmas" because they were drunk; they were just in the Christmas spirit. I crack up on how you non-locals who have eat at "Tepeyac" (as us locals call it) once a month or even less frequently, make assumptions about this place, the locals, and the neighborhood. Hey, I hear the Taco Bell chihuahua calling you...

the sauce is literally that color. I wanted to call it "florescent red" but I don't think red, uh, floresces.

Your food photography rocks - I want to reach in and grab a burrito! I always struggle with trying to make food with red sauce not look like something out of CSI.

their burritos are in a class by themselves, not to be judged among mere "mortal" burritos!

my parents used to bring the family here when i was a wee little one (although, my taste buds were more sensitive to the spices back then). now, as an adult i appreciate El Tepeyac on a different level and have to agree that you're not an Angelino until you've done tequila shots (at 9 in the morning!) with Manny!

...long live El Tepeyac!

They are indeed good the next day, and the one after that. Last time my mother was in town we got four meals each out of the one Especial de Manuel.

i luv u carrie... the tep is my east la spot! although it was for the burritos that i discovered that place, my favorite is the kiko's special - two cheese enchiladas drowned in red sauce topped with two runny fried eggs. i aspire to be manny one day.

my bunker hill colleagues and i often drive to el tepeyac for lunch. we hungrily refer to the place as "goat", because we joke that the large Manuel Special burritos are so big, they are nearly the size of a baby goat (they aren't actually goat meat). favorite dish: machaca manuel special
