Fantastic job on this post Lindsay! I am so glad that I got to accompany you to Angeleno Hgts (hee hee) as we both discovered more about the rich history of our lovely Los Angeles. Nice touch with the YouTube clips too.

Easily the most thorough article about Angelino Heights that I've seen.

A few corrections, though:

Technically, all of Sunset Boulevard (as is Everett & its charming park north of Sunset) is within the original tract of Angeleno Heights, though it's pretty rare for someone that might live on Sunset to think of themselves as living within the Angelino Heights of Carroll Avenue.

While paint is regulated by the HPOZ, I have never heard of a homeowner being asked to molecularly analyze their paint and repaint in exactly the same colors. Some may have taken this on as their own project, but the members of the board typically suggest a paint scheme of three or more colors that picks out the window sash from the trim from the siding or stucco.

Also, the Angeleno Heights Trolley Line's Birney car is certainly a treasure worthy of reuse, but it is a little ways from being completely restored. It is largely intact, but lacks the mechanical underbelly that would allow it to run. Be sure to visit their site & support their effort.

It is my understanding that the owner of the Stilson-Botsford House, while doing a great deal of landscaping, has no intention of restoring the exterior, which she has stated is covered in a concrete-based stucco. It is truly the keystsone property of Carroll Avenue and its accurate restoration may not be happening real soon.

Linds, you always manage to make me care about some place that I would otherwise not care about. Totally enjoyed being able to have a terrific architectural walking tour while sitting on my ass at work.

How do the neighborhood kids know which house to be afraid of on Halloween?

guest #1-borders of neighborhoods are tricky, persnickity things. based on the time i spent in the neighborhood, and in working in researching boundaries of many neighborhoods over the past few months for these projects, some are very hard to define, such as the example your own residence provides. there is only one blue official neighborhood sign posted in Angelino Heights, and it is located at the corner of Bellevue and E. Edgeware. that said, the placement of the signs is often arbitrary, and once upon a time were placed in a neighborhood's center--they don't always indicate official boundaries, if there are any. it is my impression that the boundaries of Angelino Heights, as given and after doing my research on the area, do not include what is on major thoroughfares like Sunset Blvd. and Echo Park Ave.--which would mean that you do in fact live in Echo Park. rather, those streets, like the 101 fwy to the south, merely encircle the residential area contained within their reach, but are not a part of the neighborhood.

i've always loved the architecture in angelino heights, but now i'm confused as to what neighborhood i live in. if i'm on echo park ave south of sunset, am i in angelino heights or echo park? your map says the former; the state of my apartment building says the latter. is it no man's land?
