One of the best areas to live in LA. It is still in the old style of LA before LA's "hollywood chic" homogenization. I live around the corner from Pryor's old house. Most of the Bars are really good and have their individual style. Northridge, aside from Chatsworth, is the only place where your neighbor can be a high level executive of a company, you regularly see a porn star at Target, and check out the filming of a Hollywood movie all in the same day.

North of Rinaldi is Porter Ranch. I am from there too, Castlebay alumni. Recently they Neighborhood council is trying to separate from Northridge to be identified as Porter Ranch. No real changes will happened except that zip 91326 and the other one (I forget) will be Porter Ranch not Northridge, plus those zips are much more expensive (realestate terms) than the average Northridge ones.

Oh and thank you for telling us what that gated place on Devenshire and Reseda is! I had been wondering my entire life! Once the gate was open and I was so tempted to drive up! I miss Northridge!

I agree, this was a GREAT POST! But I have to ask, is North of Rinaldi on Tampa considered Porter Ranch and not Northridge? I grew up there and it was Northridge to me! Anyway you hit all the hot spots...one thing I love is the house on Wilbur and I think Nordhoff, it's white and totally stands out. And I love the mall, a picture of the broadway during the quake would be cool if anyone can find it.

Thanks for the great article about Northridge. I was expecting Northridge's neighborhood project to be more cynical, but this left me with serious hometown pride! One thing-- you forgot the castle on Gresham by Parthenia!

You made Northridge interesting. A couple of years ago, I used to have to go up there a lot of work. Shooting pics of places, and I couldn't wait to get back to Melrose. Hey! That's one caveat you should put in there: Black chicks taking photos get the cops/security called on them without fail. LOL!

Very thorough job! I'm a CSUN alum, and believe me when I attended in the 1980's I had a hard time explaining to my friends, relatives, and family in California and outside of CA where the hell CSUN was.

They thought I was attending a community college (not that there's anything wrong with that).

The Northridge Earthquake literally put CSUN on the map.

As I looked at the photo essay, I mostly saw houses, which reinforces Northridge's reputation as a bedroom community.

A nice place to live once you've settled down with a spouse and kids, but not much to do otherwise.

What Speedo the 'quake survivor does not mention is that during his long recovery in hospital he found a lot of new friends on a local BBS (that was based in Northridge and survived with a few cracked walls.) He was so grateful he donated a new file server to the BBS when he got back on his feet (literally!)

this article is amazing, a fitting tribute to an underrated town.

the pictures of the unappetizing donut sign, and the bizarre arab thrift store, are right where i used to live - at the corner of napa and reseda. BUT!! - in the good eats section, you left out the carnitas michoacan restaurant that's visible in the background of the donut-sign photo. they serve HANDS DOWN the best tacos and burritos in los angeles. i know, i know. you're skeptical. try the carne asada burrito, carnitas tacos, or the juevos con bistek breakfast (translated on the menu as "steak and heggs"). steak and scrambled eggs with all the trimmings for 3 bucks! for those afraid of food poisoning, i ate there daily for 3 years without so much as a loose stool. go there right now!

Great post. I lived in Northridge and attended CSUN from 92-96, so I was there for the earthquake as well. The pics and the post both brought back tons of memories, great job!

i think you have successfully written a dissertation or at least a master's thesis on northridge. that was amazing--great pics (especially the 1994 quake ones), great details, cool facts, and lots of colorful insights. amazing work, elise! thank you for your hard work on this entry.
